What happens at a cleaning and exam

A typical visit includes a review of your health history, an exam of your teeth and gums, and a professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that brushing alone can’t clear. We’ll talk through anything we notice and answer your questions in English or Spanish. The goal is straightforward: keep your mouth healthy and catch small issues before they become bigger ones.

Routine cleaning vs deep cleaning

A routine cleaning focuses on deposits above the gumline and is what most people need every several months. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be recommended when there are signs of gum disease and deposits below the gumline. If we recommend a deep cleaning, we’ll explain why, what it involves, and how we’ll keep you comfortable — with local anesthesia when appropriate. We do not use sedation for these visits.

X-rays and screening

Dental X-rays help us see between teeth, under existing restorations, and below the gumline when a visual exam isn’t enough. We only take images when they’re clinically useful. When a wider view is helpful — for example for wisdom teeth or implant planning — we may discuss panoramic imaging or CBCT. Oral cancer screening is part of a thorough exam; tell us about any sores, lumps, or spots that haven’t healed.

How often should you come in?

Many patients do well with a cleaning and checkup about every six months. If you have gum concerns, a history of cavities, or certain medical conditions, we may suggest more frequent visits. We’ll personalize the interval to your needs rather than one-size-fits-all.
